To avoid unnecessary costs and delays, it is critical to get your outdoor signage done right the first time.
QUALITY, COST-EFFECTIVE OUTDOOR SIGNAGES
Outdoor signs in itself presents some major challenges – withstanding the effects of weather, greater “wear and tear”, as well as the possibility of vandalism if your outdoor signage is situated within easy reach.
These are the reasons why outdoor signage requires a different understanding to the materials, fabrication methods, and installation procedures to ensure that your outdoor signage will be intact for as long as it is intended. It is critical for your outdoor signage to be done right for the first time. One reason is, should it require alterations or adjustments once your signage is up, you will incur additional unnecessary costs. This is especially true if your outdoor signage is situated at the top of buildings or hard to access areas, as these would require special machinery for access, such as boomlifts, scissor lifts, or scaffolding.
As such, this requires different finishes, materials, and installation methods compared to indoor signages. This is because the environment and weather conditions play a huge part on the longevity of signage, so it is important to use the right materials suitable for the environment where the sign will be installed, or there’s a chance that the signage will deteriorate prematurely.
There are instances where prospects, in the often-made mistake of procuring with the lowest quote as the main consideration, found their outdoor signage to be fabricated of inferior quality and workmanship, and lasts only a few months before rapidly showing signs of deterioration. Yes, everything will deteriorate and fade over time, but if your signage falls apart before a reasonable time, you now probably know why.
As cliche as the saying goes, but you really do get what you pay for.
To the untrained eye, it is hard to differentiate the different materials and their purposes. It is important to understand that not all signage materials are the same, and there are many different products with different grades of materials for a variety of different applications. We pride ourselves in providing quality materials and workmanship that’s suit-for-purpose at a reasonable cost, and will not compromise on quality in order to lower the cost to win the job. Hence, if the cheapest quote the sole and only consideration, it is probably better to look elsewhere.
OUTDOOR DISPLAY SIGNAGE REGULATIONS
The display of outdoor signage in Singapore is regulated by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA), and the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA). Depending on the type and size of outdoor display signage you want produced, you may need to apply for a permit/license for approval before proceeding. In instances where your signage exceeds a certain size, you’ll also have to attain the endorsement of a Professional Engineer and other third parties as well. If you wish to know more about the rules and regulations governing the display of outdoor signage, we’ve re-produced the set of BCA signage license guidelines for your reference.
In general, there are seven classifications of display signage according to the BCA in Singapore:
- directional sign
- animated billboard
- balloon sign
There are strict guidelines as to whether you need to apply for a permit, the type of signage you want, signages that are prohibited, as well as the involvement of other third party professionals or approvals from other overseeing organisations. To avoid violating any rules and paying unnecessary penalties, it is best to make sure that whatever signs you intend to produce comply with regulations from the respective authorities.
